Self guided Marlborough biking Wine Tour

What makes our bike tours different is that, instead of us choosing which of the cellar doors you are going to visit and have you go around as part of one big group, your tour is un-guided so your time is going to be very much your own.  You will have the freedom to make up your own mind and decide which cellar doors you want to visit,  you can go at your own pace and stay as long or as short a time at each place as you want and you won’t feel pressured to keep up with others that go out at the same time as you.

  • Our fully inclusive package includes:

    • A base in the vineyards – no need to cycle 10km (6 miles) from Blenheim to Renwick each way before you reach a winery.
    • Free transport of you and your party from accommodation within 15km (9 miles) of our base, so no worries about drinking and driving.
    • Fully supported service in case of breakdown, puncture, injury or illness to ensure a worry-free day.
    • A detailed wine map and advice on the best routes you should take to get to your chosen cellar doors so that you know you will be making the most of your time whilst out.  For those who might not be too confident on a bike or if you are a family with very young children, we do have recommended routes that will cater for you as these include family-friendly cellar doors and also quiet roads and bike paths.
    • A choice of well maintained bicycles and helmets, 4 bottle wine carriers to hold those all important purchases plus baskets on the front.

Wine Tours by Bike do not endorse drink driving in any way as the safety of you and your family, as well as those around you, is our number one priority.
We will not actively encourage anyone to drive themselves to our base, as you only need to do tastings at 4 cellar doors to be potentially over the NZ legal limit to drive.
We offer a free pick-up and drop-off service from your accommodation in either Blenheim / Renwick and encourage you to use this service, as we want you to enjoy your time whilst out among the cellar doors. This transport service is only available within a 15km radius of our base.

Let us drive, then you don’t have to risk driving under the influence.

Tasting Charges and Etiquette

This is an opportunity for you to explore, but also discover how unique our individual cellar doors are.
Each “cellar door experience” includes the chance to sample their “tasting flight”, as well as giving you an insight as to how they make their wine, grow grapes in Marlborough, and how our climate and soils make the wines of Marlborough so distinctive. They are always happy to answer any questions you may have, so don’t be shy. Not all charge for this “experience”, but those that do, it is usually just a minimal amount of $5.00 p/p which is considered a fair exchange for the time they have spent with you, and the wine you have been tasting.
These charges are not included in your bike hire, so you will be required to pay the cellar doors yourself, and they can accept either card or cash.
In many cases, they will refund this charge if you purchase a bottle of wine from them.

Each winery will have a dedicated cellar door staff member/winery owner who will host the tasting and guide you through the available wines. They will pour the wines for you, explaining a little about each of them and they are more than happy to answer any questions you may have. It is recommended that white wines are tasted first with red wines to follow and then dessert wines last. Wine tasting can be very subjective so don't worry if you don't like them all!!
Please be conscious of those around you who are also there to experience the cellar door and allow them to enjoy their tasting and ask questions.
Be courteous to your hosts as for many of them, the cellar door will be an extension of their home and producing wines is their passion which they welcome you to enjoy and experience.
